Who we are

Cutaway is published by Comet Barn. Comet Barn is a brand of Hamperpick Ventures LLP.

This policy explains what information Cutaway (“the app”) handles, why, and the choices you have. It applies only to the app; the Comet Barn website has its own privacy policy.

In short

The app works without an account and does not ask for your name or email. It has no ads, no analytics and no tracking. What you read and save stays on your device and is not sent to us. We do not sell information about you.

Information stored on your device

The app keeps the following on your device so it can work. None of it is sent to us:

• Which explainers you have read, and on which days (for your streak and track progress)
• The explainers you save
• Your answers to the review questions, and when each question is next due
• Your settings, such as the reminder time
• Whether you subscribe to Cutaway Plus, as reported by Apple

Backups

Like other app data, it is included in your device’s backups (in iCloud or on a computer) if you make them, and it comes back when you restore one. Those backups are kept by Apple or on your computer, not by us.

Subscription and payments

Cutaway Plus is an auto-renewing subscription (a yearly and a monthly plan) sold through the App Store. Apple takes the payment; we never see your card or payment details, your name or your Apple Account.

To know whether you subscribe, the app asks Apple on your device. Apple’s sales reports to us do not identify you. Apple’s handling of payments is covered by Apple’s privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Reminders

If you turn on reminders and allow notifications, the app schedules them on your device. Your device shows them at the time you chose; no server of ours sends them, and we do not know whether you have them on. You can turn them off in the app’s settings or in your device’s notification settings.

New content

To get new content, the app downloads it from cometbarn.com. The request says nothing about you or what you have read. Like every request on the internet it carries your IP address, which our server uses only to send the file back; the server does not keep a log of it.

When you write to us

Report an error in this pill opens your own email app with a message to support@cometbarn.com already started. Besides what you write, it includes which explainer it is about, the date the explainer was last checked and the app’s version number. Nothing is sent unless you send it yourself.

When you email us, from the app or otherwise, we receive your email address and what you write, and use them only to answer you and to correct the content.

Sharing

When you share something from the app, it makes an image and hands it to the app you choose through your device’s share sheet. That app delivers it; we do not receive it.

Widgets, search and Shortcuts

The Home Screen and Lock Screen widget shows the explainer of the day from the content already on your device.

Explainers are added to Spotlight search on your device, so you can find them from the Home Screen.

The Shortcuts actions open an explainer on your device.

All of this happens on your device and nothing is sent to us.

Crash reports and statistics from Apple

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers on your device, Apple may give us crash reports and statistics such as how many people installed the app. These do not identify you. You can change this choice in your device’s Settings, under Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

How we use information

Information is used only to:

• Run the app on your device
• Give you what you subscribed to
• Answer you if you write to us, and correct mistakes you report
• Find and fix crashes

Who we share it with

We do not sell or rent information about you, and the app contains no advertising or analytics code from other companies. We share information only if the law requires it.

Keeping and deleting your data

Deleting the app deletes everything it stored on your device.

To clear some of it without deleting the app, use Settings → Reset reading history. It clears your read marks, streak and review questions (saved explainers are kept).

Apple keeps its records of your subscription as needed for receipts, refunds and the law.

We keep emails you send us for as long as we need them to answer you and to correct the content. To have yours deleted, email support@cometbarn.com.

Children

The app is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us information, email support@cometbarn.com and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the app changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s App Store listing.
