Billionaire Bay beginner’s guide: build your first empire

A seaside cafe, warehouse and growing harbor businesses beside an earnings ledger.

Billionaire Bay is an idle tycoon game about building businesses, using managers and upgrades, then selling an empire for Legacy Stars to begin another run. For a useful first session, learn how 1 business earns, what a manager automates, and which spending improves the income you actually collect.

There is no single upgrade order that fits every balance, region and stage of a run. This guide gives you a way to compare choices using the information in your game.

Learn the first business before spreading your attention

There are 8 businesses with their own interiors and mechanics. The café uses shifts, for example, so opening a new business is not always the same as adding another copy of the last one.

Start by following a complete earning cycle. Notice what begins the work, when money becomes available and whether you need to collect or restart something. Then read the next upgrade’s cost and effect. You can make a better decision once you understand which part of that cycle you are improving.

The café is 1 of the game’s businesses. Learn its own work cycle instead of treating every interior as the same system.

Compare upgrades by what they add

When 2 upgrades compete for your cash, compare their additional earnings with their cost. Look at the change, not just the larger total income on one screen.

For illustration, suppose upgrade A costs 1,000 and adds 100 income per minute, while upgrade B costs 3,000 and adds 150 per minute. At those hypothetical rates, A takes 10 minutes to earn back its cost and B takes 20 minutes. A has the quicker simple payback.

That example is a decision method, not an actual price list. Bonuses, collection limits, required active play and unlocks can change which purchase is more useful. If you will not be present to run an active cycle, its headline income may be less valuable to you than an improvement that continues working during your absence.

Before buying, ask: what earns more, what takes less attention, and does this unlock something I need next?

What managers change

Managers keep businesses running while you look elsewhere. Read a manager’s effect and the business they are assigned to before hiring or changing assignments. Automation and a raw income increase solve different problems.

For example, if a business repeatedly waits for you to restart its work, automation can be useful even when another upgrade shows a more attractive percentage. If the business already runs smoothly, a different improvement may fit your next session better.

The game also distinguishes run managers from Legacy managers. Cash-hired run managers belong to the current empire. Legacy managers are part of the longer-term progression and survive an empire sale. This difference matters when you are preparing to restart.

Plan around offline earnings

Billionaire Bay keeps earning while you are away and supports offline play. Offline earnings have limits, so do not assume leaving for twice as long always doubles what you can collect.

Before a longer break, look at the offline and collection limits shown in your game. An extension can be useful if your absence regularly exceeds the current limit. It does less for a player who checks in before the limit is reached anyway.

On return, read the earnings summary and collect what is available before planning your next spending. Compare the result with what you expected: it helps you understand whether the bottleneck is production, collection or the time you spend away.

Treat the Exchange as part of the game economy

The Exchange simulates stock and crypto trading with in-game money. It is not a real investment account, and its fictional prices should not be used as guidance about real markets.

For a beginner, the useful distinction is cash available for upgrades versus money committed to positions. A large portfolio value does not mean all that value is immediately free to spend on a business. Read the position and sale values before deciding what you can afford.

If the Exchange is making your first sessions harder to understand, learn the business cycle first. You can return to trading once you can separate business income, spending and changes in position value.

Selling the empire: what resets and what stays?

An empire sale is a progression step, not simply a large cash collection. The game pays Legacy Stars and starts another run. The sale preview tells you whether you can sell and what the offer is worth.

Current-run progress Longer-term progress
Cash, businesses and their levels reset Legacy Stars and lifetime Legacy progression remain
Run rank and run goals reset Achievements and collection ownership remain
Cash-hired run managers must be hired again Legacy managers and their levels remain
Exchange positions are accounted for in the sale process Purchases and account settings remain

Read the actual sale summary before confirming. A decision based only on your current cash can miss the importance of the next run’s retained bonuses.

Should you spend every Legacy Star?

Stars in your balance provide an income benefit. Spending stars on a perk removes those stars from the balance, so you are trading some of that balance-based benefit for the perk’s effect. Lifetime stars, used for Legacy progression, are a separate measure from the spendable balance.

A perk that gives longer offline earning may fit a player who takes long breaks. Starting cash may fit someone focused on the next run’s opening. Read both the perk and the remaining balance rather than assuming an affordable purchase is automatically the best purchase.

A practical first-session checklist

  1. Complete a work cycle and collect its earnings.
  2. Read the next business and upgrade requirements.
  3. Compare an upgrade’s added benefit with its cost and attention needs.
  4. Check whether a manager addresses the problem you are actually experiencing.
  5. Read the current objective and work toward an achievable unlock.
  6. Before leaving, check the offline and collection limits.

You do not need to buy a pack or watch an ad to understand these systems. The game is free to play, with optional purchases and reward ads you choose.
